'Big Fat Greek Wedding 2': 6 callbacks to the original

More than ten years after Toula (Nia Vardalos) and Ian (John Corbett) wed in a MyBig Fat Greek Wedding, Toula's extended Portokalos family is back for more celebrations of matrimony in My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, out Friday.

Has it been a while since you've seen the original movie? Well, so you don't miss the references, here are six (of the dozens of) times the sequel makes callbacks to the first film:

The opening voiceover

Yep, Toula's here to narrate the start of the movie for us, just like she did in the first film. And one of the first things we see while she speaks is her parents' house, which, if you remember from the first Wedding, has a Parthenonon-like entrance with a giant Greek flag on the garage.

Windex

Toula's dad, Gus, is first seen in Wedding 2 spraying his Windex... because he has car trouble. As you probably recall, Gus used Windex to heal everything from "psoriasis to poison ivy" as Toula tells us in the first movie.

"You better get married..."

Can you finish the rest of the line? "... you're starting to look old." Gus told this to Toula over a decade ago, and repeats the same line to his granddaughter, Paris (Elena Kampouris), who's just a teenager. This time around, good 'ol Gus also has his same shpiel about how every word has Greek origins.

Bundt cake

Back when Ian and Toula were engaged, Ian's parents brought Toula's mother, Maria, a bundt cake. At the time, Maria didn't understand why "there's a hole in this cake," as she says in Wedding 1. In Wedding 2, Maria's Greek restaurant serves mini bundt cakes with flowers in the center.

The glasses

Remember those giant, round glasses Toula wore when she first met Ian? In the sequel, she finds those lenses again in a drawer, after she breaks her newer glasses.

Aunt Voula's crazy stories

The outgoing Voula (Andrea Martin) is the friendliest and most open Portokalis family member. This means you can find her greeting strangers with over-shares, like telling Ian's parents in the first movie about a lump growing in the back of her head. In this film, she makes people (including John Stamos' newscaster) uncomfortable with details of her swollen tongue, sex life and uneven ovaries.
