12 Photographers Win 2017 Guggenheim Fellowships

Mary F. Calvert, Maggie Steber and Zoe Strauss are among the 12 photographers who have been named Guggenheim Fellows for 2017, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation announced on April 7. The Fellowshipsprovide grants of undisclosed amounts to support projects by artists, scholars, scientists and writers. This year's Fellows in the category of photography are:Marina BerioMary F. CalvertDaniel W. CoburnKenneth Gonzales-DayThilde JensenLeigh LedareMichael LundgrenAmanda MeansShaun O'BoyleMaggie SteberZoe StraussBradley Temkin

In addition, Zackary Canepari, director of the 2015 documentary T-Rex was named a Fellow in the Film-Video category. Zinadu Saro-Wiwa, who incorporates her own photos and video in her installations, was named a Fellow in the Fine Arts category.

This year, the Foundation chose 173 Fellows from close to 3,000 applicants. Past Guggenheim Fellows have included Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Jon Lowenstein, Carlos Javier Ortiz, Lyle Ashton Harris, Brenda Ann Kenneally and Alex Soth.
