Photographers meet to critique, learn new skills

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - Once a month, photography enthusiasts meet at Northern Michigan University to take part in a photo workshop class. The class has been meeting monthly for more than seven years.

They've learned basic composition, lighting and perspective for taking pictures. Students said the class transformed the way they view the world and that simple steps, such as cropping, can sometimes make all the difference.

"You can take a picture and you see it, but when you project it, sometimes if you crop it and just use part of it, you get more out of it than you do if you see the whole picture," Photography Student Phyllis James aid. "It's more appealing to the eye."

Another photography tip is to keep the subject away from the middle of the picture.

The teacher gives assignments each time, for snapping different photos. The class then shares their photos with others in the hopes of getting constructive criticism.
