Calgary Herald and Calgary Sun photographer/videographer Leah Hennel has claimed another national award for her work.

Nominated as a finalist in four categories at the News Photographers Association of Canada (NPAC) 2016 National Pictures of the Year awards ceremony in Toronto on Saturday evening, Hennel was awarded first place in the Sports Action category for her shot of a saddle bronc rider lying facedown in the mud while getting stepped on by a bucking horse.

The photo, taken by Hennel at the Calgary Stampede rodeo last year, was also given a citation of merit in the Sports Photo category at the National Newspaper Awards (NNA) held Friday night.

Hennel was awarded third place in the NPAC's Social Issues category for her stark, black-and-white photo illustrating assisted dying for the Independent. Hennel was also vying for arguably the NPAC's most prestigious award, Photojournalist of the Year, as well as best Picture Story Feature for her shot of a lone rider near the Lazy U Ranch by Pincher Creek.

The scenic shot also earned her first place in the Feature Photo category at the NNAs Friday.
