Meet photographer who gets the glint in Uhuru’s eye

Emmanuel Jambo is the official photographer of President Uhuru Kenyatta. He's taken portraits of many important people, including South Sudan President Salva Kiir, and former presidents of Zambia, Rupiah Banda and Kenneth Kaunda. He recently photographed Riek Machar.

Back home, he has immortalised Deputy President William Ruto on print as well as former presidential candidates like Martha Karua and Peter Kenneth, not to mention numerous governors, MPs and senior government officials. Mention five well-heeled weddings in the country and he has probably photographed a number of them.

We sat at the front lawn of his house off Ngong Road with his skittish Golden Retriever named "Che Guevara" leaping around the whole time, his yelps only drowned by his master's frequent bursts of raucous laughter.

----------------------------------------------

Who is the most important person you have taken a picture of?

Emmanuel Jambo! A selfie! (Loud laughter).

Fair enough. How did you end up here in Kenya taking pictures?

I'm originally from Sudan. I'm from the Moru tribe, one of the many small tribes of South Sudan. We left Sudan when I was 12. I don't remember much apart from the school, basketball court and the swimming academy. These are the places where I spent most of my time. Oh, and ping pong.

My father was an ambassador, my mom worked for a telecommunication company in Sudan. We left for Egypt and there I remember playing basketball and ping pong. I somehow got over swimming. When we moved to the US, it was the same; basketball, a lot of it and some ping pong. Then 16 years later, I hurt myself in college and stopped playing basketball.

When did you discover your talent for photography?

I had gone to take a picture in this studio owned by a couple of Koreans in Atlanta and I remember directing the shoot. I picked up a camera on my birthday then just started practising and taking pictures.

My first wedding shoot was for a friend who loved my work and encouraged me to give it a shot. I was scared of screwing it up so I asked her to only pay for the rolls of film. When she saw the work she was wowed and paid me Sh8,000 which I used to buy more equipment.

I quit my day job and then set up a website and work started coming. A year-and-half later, I came to visit my sister in Kenya and I have never left. (Laughs).

What makes one a good photographer?

Seeing things that others photographers won't see. There are a lot of photographers now, cameras are more accessible and much cheaper than back in the days and so everybody can see through a lens and adjust exposure.

But what takes you to the next level is thinking beyond that – crazy lighting, crazy concepts and most importantly you have to catch moments.

You can be good in the studio, but if you go outside you have to be able see moments and take advantage of them. You also have to know how to deal with people, how to break the ice, how to make people laugh.

Because people who are relaxed make easier subjects to photograph. You get the best of people when they are relaxed with you.

Has the phone camera changed the game?

Man! The hell with these Samsungs and iPhones! No I'm just kidding (Laughs loudly). You know, on the contrary this is actually a good thing.

These fancy apps and phones have just made people fall more in love with photography.

But you know what, you can have the best high-end camera, like a Leica going for something like Sh3 million, but you don't know how to use it! You don't know how to pose people or use light or pick locations.

Having a camera on your phone doesn't make you a photographer.

What's the most defining thing about taking pictures of dignitaries?

You know, with the possible exception of President Kenyatta because he's one of the easiest people to photograph, I don't enjoy taking pictures of VIPs.

Most are very stiff. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's an honour, but I mean any studio can take those pictures.

I want to try out new things and push boundaries, but most of the VVIPs won't allow that.

Now, I love fashion and editorial because I meet interesting people who I have to make look good. I have become picky with the weddings I shoot. I now have to interview couples before I agree to shoot their weddings.

If I don't like you I'm not gonna shoot you. If I don't like the location, I'm not gonna shoot you. If you want to shoot a wedding you saw in a book somewhere and aren't open to new ideas, I won't shoot your wedding.

I want to do more for weddings, play with different concepts, different locations, basically be more creative. I just don't want to do the same weddings.

It gets boring and I don't want to do boring in this part of my career.

Can you tell a couple who isn't in love during weddings?

Definitely! I always tell. There are couples who are wedding for the sake, maybe because of their parents or whatever reason. It's easy to tell, their body language gives them away even though they might be dancing and laughing.

Who has been the most photogenic person you have ever photographed?

Well, that will be me again! (Laughs loudly) There are a lot of people. (Thinks) Ajuma Nasenyana is very photogenic, even when she isn't modelling.

What's your biggest fear?

Losing my eyesight...yeah...that is scary...that is very scary.

I don't have a lot of regrets. (Pause) I played basketball with the sole dream of joining the NBA, but I got hurt and there is nothing I can do about that, but I don't know if I would be the same person if I continued playing basketball.

Photography has made me meet a lot of people, one of them Samira (the girlfriend). I'm very happy. I don't have any regrets to be honest.

I want my name to be mentioned in the world when you talk about photography. I want to leave a mark.

If it were up to you, how would you fix South Sudan?

I've always been a pan-African guy, we try to solve things village by village. But I think if we can kill tribalism, South Sudan and the rest of the continent can go far.

What's your greatest possession now?

Hmm...(Long pause). She's sitting in the house. (Laughs) Damn you have hard questions, can you come back for that?

Samira and I go out of town a lot. I also like sitting with this guy here (Che) after a long day, he relaxes me. I watch movies and documentaries. I read a little bit. And you know, getting drunk with the guys; whiskey, shisha, weed.

Should I leave the weed part out of the record?

No, put it in the record. Hell, why not, man? (Laughs)

Does weed help with your creativity?

It helps me think a lot. I get some great ideas after smoking it. It also makes me relax.... helps a great deal with my creativity. It works for some people but it's not for everyone, just like alcohol. You know some guys drink, they want to fight, me and you drink we want to party. (Laughs). Weed drops off all the noise and makes things clear.

What did Uhuru think of your dreadlocks the first time he met you?

He likes them. He joked about them the first time we met. Mr Ruto likes them as well. A lot of people like them. Some people call me Rasta, others call me Mungiki or Mau Mau….it's all good. (Laughs)

You love being here in Kenya?

Are you ever going to go back?

There were days when we marvelled at developments in mobile phones such as colour screens, mp3 playback and a new version of Snake.

But this amazing aerial photograph of London taken on an Apple iPhone 6 shows just how far the technology has come in recent years.

The stunning image was captured by wedding photographer Maria Farrelly as she came into land at London Heathrow Airport on Tuesday.

Miss Farrelly, 37, had been arriving over the capital at about 6.15pm on a Scandinavian Airlines flight from Oslo in Norway at the time.

The photographer from Newport, south Wales, posted the image on Facebook yesterday, saying: 'Hello London, you're looking beautiful!'

Among the landmarks that can be seen are The O2, Canary Wharf, Tower Bridge, the River Thames and skyscrapers of the City of London.

Bridal Beauty Tips for Wedding Photographs by Denver Wedding Photographer Shea McGrath

Bridal Beauty Tips for Wedding Photographs by Denver Wedding Photographer Shea McGrath

Shea McGrath, Denver wedding photographer, recently provided essential beauty tips to brides-to-be as she prepares for engagement and wedding photographs.

Denver, CO, July 29, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Shea McGrath, Denver wedding photographer, recently provided essential beauty tips to brides-to-be as she prepares for engagement and wedding photographs.

"Many women come to me with makeup question when preparing for photographs so I often provide them with these basic tips before the engagement or wedding shoot. Sometimes it's not a matter of overdoing, but simple adjustments are suggested."

1. Spray tan two days prior to the photos will give skin a glowing effect without the sun-damaged risks inherent with sun booths.2. Manicure and pedicure before the big day with gel nail polish. This type of polish is durable as it remains intact for two weeks. Avoid bold colors. They can be very distracting in photographs.3. Invest in waterproof mascara. Weddings are known for crying. Photographs with mascara tracks do not make the best pictures.4. Do not wash your hair a day or two before getting it styled. The natural oils actually help th e hair stay styled longer and keep a nice shine for the photographs.5. Do not skimp on using a primer. Makeup will stay on longer, will look smoother, and more natural. Make sure your skin is clean and well-moisturized before applying makeup. Never apply foundation with your fingers. Always use a clean brush or sponge.6. Do not overuse the blush. Use a cream blush for a natural look. Smiling will help identify the peak of your cheeks and blend to your temple.7. Use lip balm then lipstick. This will keep your lips moist. Then use a lip pencil to keep the color longer.8. Invest in oil-absorbing wipes. Oil-blotting tissues are great during photo shoots, so don't forget to stow a few away.

Colorado Wedding Photographer Shea McGrath Agrees Best Place to Get Married

Denver, CO, July 25, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Frommers.com recently released the best places for couples in love to get married in each state. Shea McGrath, Denver wedding photographer commented, "I find the selections quite interesting and most agreeable. Aspen does provide a great backdrop to tie the knot. Too bad there could not be more as I am a bit bias to Colorado and can think of many places that serve as a stunningly romantic place for a wedding."

According to Frommers.com. "Although it's known as a playground for the fabulously wealthy, Aspen was founded as a mining camp during the Colorado Silver Boom. Things have come a long way since those humble beginnings; now the silver is found in shops like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Dior—just to name a few. For similar glitz, couples can say 'I do' before the backdrop of the Elk Mountain Range at Aspen's only five-star, five-diamond hotel, The Little Nell."

The choices range from traditional venues like the Thorncrown Ch apel, Eureka Springs, Arkansas, to wild places like Cannon Beach in Oregon. Some involve activities — a windjammer cruise in Maine, a hot-air balloon ride in Albuquerque, New Mexico, while others suggest world-famous landmarks like the Empire State Building in New York City and Arizona's Grand Canyon, where the National Park Service offers several locations for small gatherings.

Bandara shines at international photography awards

Image 1From a background in Engineering that he turned into a professionally-trained photojournalism career, Colombo-based photographer, Geeshan Bandara has earned global recognition and prestige in the industry by winning multiple awards at international wedding photography competitions.

Geeshan was recently awarded a prestigious Fearless Award from their most recent collection: Collection 27, June 2015.  Fearless Awards are a selectively curated set of the finest images that redefine wedding photography, and is contested by the best photographers from around the world.

Fearless Photographers is an international society that counts the best wedding photographers in the world among its members.  The society is heavily influenced by a documentary-style approach to wedding photography.

Geeshan brings prestige to Sri Lanka as the first locally based photographer to win an esteemed Fearless Award. The winning image is one of Geeshan's personal favourites: a well-timed moment captured during the bridal preparation of a traditional Sri Lankan Hindu wedding.

In May 2015, Geeshan was the first Sri Lanka-based photographer to receive two awards from the Professional Wedding Photographers of Canada (PWPC) for their Spring Contest 2015.   Geeshan's images placed 5th in the Bride & Groom Portrait and 9th in the Bridal Party Portrait categories.

PWPC is recognised as the only organization uniting qualified wedding photographers across Canada whose eligibility is based on strict industry guidelines that includes adherence to a code of conduct.

"We are unobtrusive, and ever-vigilant.  We believe in capturing the beauty and sentiment of a day as it unfolds, especially all those moments that often go unnoticed," said Geeshan of his approach to wedding photojournalism.

"Sri Lanka is a beautiful, year-round wedding destination with some of the most sought-after locations in the world.  I find that my clients are increasingly seeking documentary-style wedding photography," he added.

Geeshan is a member of the International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers, Fearless Photographers and the Professional Wedding Photographers of Canada.

Shrewsbury wedding saved after photographer runs off with couple's money

PUBLISHED: July 22, 2015 08:01LAST UPDATED: July 22, 2015 08:24

It is every bride's nightmare, when a major element of the wedding plan goes wrong and threatens to ruin the big day.

And for a Shrewsbury couple, when the photographer they booked ran off with their money, they feared they would have no professional record of their special day.

But after hearing about their plight a wedding photography company from Castlefields came to their aid.

Caroline Bloor, of JOL Photography, said: "The groom rang us on Wednesday and the wedding was on the following Saturday - he was in a terrible state and blamed himself.

"He told us what had happened and sounded so upset that we agreed to help them – they are a lovely couple and were in such a desperate situation we felt we had to help.

"We did charge a small fee for our work, but it was much less than we would usually work for."

Bride and groom Sophie and Daniel, from Harlescott, booked a photographer from an impressive looking website after they were offered a deal that sounded fantastic value.

Caroline said the couple paid £500 to the photographer and once the last payment was made he simply disappeared.

She said: "His website vanished and none of the mobile numbers the couple had were answered - they quickly realised what had happened.

"Then they tried to find photographers who could do it at such short notice - luckily we had the weekend free, amazingly it was our only free weekend this year."

James Bloor and his wife Caroline have been operating JOL Photography for five years and said that couples do need to take care when booking a wedding photographer.

She said: "They really do need to research the photographer before they make a booking.

"Reading comments about the photographer on social media and checking recommendations is the best way.

"Couples will always try to save money where they can with weddings, but if something sounds too good to be true then sadly it might well be."

Nicky Hilton celebrates one-week wedding anniversary with stunning photo

Sign up to our newsletters and alerts 21 JULY 2015

Nicky Hilton has been reminiscing on the day she said "I do" to her fiancé James Rothschild, and to mark the first week of their marriage, the hotel heiress shared a tender snap on Instagram taken from her big day.

The photo showed Nicky, 31, kissing her new husband on the lips, while James, who looked dapper in a crisp black suit, embraced his beautiful bride.

"One week ago," she simply captioned the image, alongside a heart emoticon.

James Rothschild and Nicky Hilton married on 10 July at Kensington Palace

The new Mr and Mrs Rothschild looked to be in a world of their own as they shared the intimate moment, while one of Nicky's bridesmaids helped smooth out the bride's flowing train.

While many women stay tight-lipped about the details of their wedding dress, Nicky was always open about her dream of walking down the aisle in Valentino. Her show-stopping gown, which is said to have cost around £50,000, took pride of place in the photo.

The bride stunned in a £50,000 Valentino haute couture wedding dress

The Valentino haute couture wedding dress was made with three different tones of ivory and silver guipure, and richly embellished with crystals. It was reminiscent of the Duchess of Cambridge's stunning gown, featuring long lace sleeves, a cinched waist and a flowing skirt.

Nicky and her banker beau married on Friday 10 July in a romantic ceremony in London. The couple exchanged vows in front of family and friends, including Nicky's sister and her maid of honour Paris Hilton, at The Orangery in Kensington Palace, just a stone's throw away from where Kate and Prince William live.

Paris Hilton shared some photos of her sister Nicky's wedding preparations

Other guests who were expected at the wedding included Paris' boyfriend Thomas Gross, Chelsea Clinton and her husband Marc Mezvinsky, and Florence Brudenell-Bruce with her husband Henry St George.

Close friend Petra Stunt and her husband James were also said to be attending. It was at Petra's wedding in Italy in 2011 where Nicky met her future husband James.

The bride and her older sister Paris, 34, got ready for the big day in a suite at Claridges. The TV personality shared a few snaps on Instagram of Nicky's wedding preparations, including one of the siblings wearing their matching dressing gowns, bearing the words bride and maid of honour.

Working: Auburn photographer Rene Roy, capturing one moment at a time

AUBURN — Among the tricks to Rene Roy's whimsical sleeping baby portraits: Make sure they're super young and have a waterproof bean bag underneath. To shooting pets: Keep calm, be quick.

To getting out of her own shell: Stop caring what others think, smile.

Roy started her photography business after graduating from college in 1998, shooting a mix of commercial, wedding and portrait work.

She has photographed happy couples. Dozing newborns. College professors. Annual reports.

"What I really like is when I feel like I got 'that shot,'" Roy said. "I had this one last year, the father was looking at the bride (with) a smile but almost like a sad smile at how beautiful she was, and she was looking ahead at her groom just beaming. It was just this moment."

When she was young, Roy pictured growing up to be an illustrator. She headed off to the University of Southern Maine to pursue a bachelor of fine arts degree with a concentration in painting.

"I started to be like, 'Well, am I going to be a famous painter? I'm not really sure about that,'" she said. "I spent a lot of time in the dark room taking photo courses. My photo teacher was really cool and helpful; he was actually a commercial photographer himself."

She drew inspiration from those classes, starting out as a freelance photo assistant around Portland. She hauled gear, worked with models and learned technical details like setting up strobe lights.

"I worked with a guy a lot who did a lot of stills for Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdale's, kind of all their hard goods, like shoes and purses and jewelry and men's ties," she said. "You learn tricks about how to stuff a boot to look nice and straight and stand up. There's a lot of armature that goes on in some of this stuff."

Roy took a class on shooting newborn pictures after discovering it wasn't as easy as it looks.

"'That looks really clean and simple, I could do that,' and then I tried to do a couple and I was like, 'They're crying and they're not sleeping and this isn't working at all!'" she said. "They need to be 10 days old or less. That's where I was going wrong, (thinking) 'Well, I'll give them time and I'd do it when they are a month old.' They're too alert at that point."

Other secrets: The room needs to be hot. A full belly, or "milk coma," helps. And then, you wait.

"Those shoots are also about being really calm and really patient because they can definitely sense the feeling in the room," she said. "It's definitely the longest type of portrait shoot. Those usually take two to three hours."

When she shot for a dog catalog, first finding the dog models and then scouting locations, Roy took a similar approach. The mood had to be happy. Someone else would pet, pet, pet the dog to settle it into its pose.

"And then I'm like, click, click, click, click! And then the dog runs away and we do it again," she said.

In addition to her professional portfolio, Roy, who belongs to YPLAA, the L/A Arts board and the Maine Women's Network, also posts lots of shots of herself online, mostly silly self-portraits shot by remote trigger while she's trying to get the lighting for a client's shoot just right.

"If I've got to work, it might as well be fun," she said. "Photography actually helped me really come out of my shell. I was the art kid, for sure. I realized I needed to be (more outgoing), to direct groups and organize people, especially at weddings. It was a little hard, but you needed to do your job. Eventually you just realize it doesn't matter; either someone is going to like you or they don't."

You've spent hours looking and hours fitting, but you've finally shimmied into that perfect gown. Now it's time to find the icing on the cake. Translation: What are your accessories?

"Today's bride is all about her gown and overall look," says John Green, president of Lux Bond & Green. "The jewelry shouldn't distract from the gown and her aura. They should instead just add that element of 'wow' to her special day."

When choosing your wedding accessories, think KISS—and we don't mean your first kiss, but rather the old motto, "Keep it simple, stupid."

Green finds that simplicity works best for a bride. "It doesn't matter whether the dress is ornate or not," he explains. "Adding a necklace, earrings, or bracelet, not all three, can complement her special outfit without drawing attention directly to the jewelry."

The question is how to choose among this trio. "When her hair is up, earrings can both add the element of beauty, as well as help shape her face, depending on the styling," says Green. "Bracelets, especially on long-sleeved gowns, add that element of 'wow' if balanced with the right materials." He adds that necklaces work magnificently, depending on a bride's gown's neckline and body type, focusing the attention on her face and gown's overall beauty.

It's helpful to bring a photo of your gown along with you to the jeweler's when you're making your decision, taking into consideration how you're wearing your hair, as well as the sleeves and neckline of your dress. "It also depends on the age of the bride. The older she is and whether it's the first or second marriage always plays a role in the type of jewelry to accessorize the dress or gown," he adds. Think edgy ear cuffs for a younger look or a classic pearls for an older bride.

Also sometimes a family heirloom can become a nice focal addition to your dress, says Green. This accessory pulls double duty, evoking memories and looking beautiful.

And although a gorgeous pair of stud earrings can make for a classic, when it comes to big-day diamonds, it's the more the merrier, according to Green.

"Drop diamond earrings have become the hot item for the brides of 2015," he adds. "They spend a lot of time with their hair for the special day. And what could be more befitting than adding a beautiful pair of diamond earrings to her special outfit and smile? Drop earrings from about one to two inches with smaller diamonds in beautiful patterns are today's go-to bridal accessory."

And of course, your accessories can easily cover the "something blue" part of your wedding wardrobe. Consider stacking sapphire rings (on your right hand, of course) or adding bangles of blue.

Whatever jewelry you choose, the spotlight will nevertheless be on one single accessory to come: your new wedding ring.

A photographer stole the show during a wedding service when she fell into a lake while taking pictures of the happy couple moments after they tied the knot.

The unfortunate incident took place in Urbana, Illinois, and was captured on video by one of the guests, much to the embarrassment of the photographer involved.

In the clip, the couple are pronounced husband and wife and after receiving claps from the people in attendance, walk away to the sound of Felix Mendelssohn's Wedding March.

Just married! The newlyweds tie the knot and walk away to the sound of Felix Mendelssohn's Wedding March

The couple stroll down the boardwalk and the photographer takes pictures of them walking hand in hand

The couple make their way down the boardwalk while the photographer snaps pictures of them strolling hand in hand.

Hoping to get a number of high-quality shots, the photographer begins to step backwards so as the frame the couple, who continue to head towards her, as perfectly as possible.

The photographer takes a portrait shot of the pair and then flips her camera on its side with the intention of taking a landscape picture.

The photographer begins to walk backwards (left) but goes too far without looking and steps off the boardwalk and into the lake (right)

Disaster: The photographer tries to keep the camera above water as she falls into the lake to the sounds of guests screaming

However, disaster strikes and as she goes to step backwards once again she steps off the boardwalk and loses her balance.

She then falls straight into the lake – to the sound of dramatic screams from some of the guests – while holding her camera high above her head in an attempt to save it from the water.

The groom runs to her aid and offers his assistance as a number of other guests join him in an attempt to rescue her from the lake.

Helping hand: Wedding guests and the groom assist the photographer and help pull her out of the lake

The woman looks slightly worse for wear and asks whether the camera is okay while wringing out her dress

Meanwhile the mus ic is rather hastily turned off – adding to the tension of the scene.

The woman is then pulled from the water and helped back onto the boardwalk. Looking slightly worse for wear she tells the bride that she is sorry before asking if the camera is okay.

The video concludes with guests attempting to find the woman a towel and the bride and groom heading off together.

Meet the undertaker couple who posed for their wedding photos with a coffin

Meet the undertaker couple who posed for their wedding photos with a coffinJenny Tay and Darren Cheng chose to have a coffin in their wedding shoot. Photo: Joel Lim.

A fatal train crash was the catalyst for a Singapore couple's death inspired wedding shoot – because the groom's parents were on board.

Darren Cheng and Jenny Tay gained the nickname 'the undertaker couple' after their wedding photos caused controversy when they were shot dressed to the nines sitting on a coffin.

Darren, 30, and Jenny, 29, run Direct Funeral Services in Singapore.

When the photos went viral the couple explained it was because they wanted to remove the 'taboo' when it comes to talking about death.

Considering they were surrounded by death 27/7, it was a fair call to make.

However it turns out it was a particular brush with death that sparked the shoot.

Jenny Tay and Darren Cheng both work as Undertakers in Singapore. Photo: Joel Lim

Darren's paren ts were passengers on the Amtrak 188 train, which derailed while travelling too fast from Washington to New York on May 12, 2015.

The crash tore apart passenger cars and sent seven off the tracks.

At the time they were described as being 'smashed like aluminum cans'.

Eight people were killed and more than 200 people were injured.

Darren's parents Andrew Cheng and Ong Lay Hong (both from Singapore) were on the train.

While the pair survived they were inside the carriage with all eight who died.

"His dad escaped with a stiff neck and his mum escaped with a bruised bum," Jenny told Yahoo7.

It's an act that could only be put down to incredible luck, and is one the young couple will never forget.

For them the wedding photos serve as a reminder of wh at could have been.

"The brush with death helped give us that push to honour life and to tell people to cherish things before they never get the chance".

The wedding photos taken by photographer Joel Lim are beautiful. Set in an open field with aging trees, Jenny looks breathtaking in her taffeta dress with handsome Darren by her side.

The pair also did a Mr & Mrs Smith themed photo shoot to celebrate their love. Photo: Joel Lim.

The pair felt the photos 'summed up who they were'.

'We were surprised by the reaction," Jenny said.

"To most people a wedding and a funeral shouldn't be mixed together. For us our job is our life, that's why we decide to have a coffin in the shoot.

"It also matches our personal views. Death is definitely a part of life and it shouldn't be viewed as taboo."

From the photo s it's clear to see their love story is far from normal.

Three years ago, both ditched their already successful careers in Advertising and Counselling to take on the funeral business after Jenny's father, Roland Tay, fell ill.

Roland Tay is considered on the world's most respected undertakers – known for offering pro-Bono funeral services to families of murder victims and the poor.

It was big shoes to fill for a young modern pair coming into a very traditional industry.

Despite working in the funeral industry, the couple have a lot of fun together. Photo: Joel Lim.

But it's a move the couple have never regretted.

"I find it more meaningful to help people and I wanted to do what my father does," Jenny said.

"The funeral life allows me to feel like my life is fulfilled.

In the last three years they have worke d hard to shift the strong attitudes of Singapore's highly traditional funeral business and modernise it.

"The industry used to be very rough. When I first started it was very male dominated and it was a big culture shock," Jenny said.

"Most of the people in the industry were between 50 and 60 years old.

"I think we've made some important changes which have changed the perception of the industry".

One of those was drawing inspiration from the hospitality and hotel industry to provide a more comforting service for grieving families.

The couple also run a wedding flower business together – something that will no doubt come in handy when the pair get married in front of 700 people in October.

Darren and Jenny believe death isn't a 'taboo' subject and hoped to create open conversations about it. Photo: Joel Lim

The pair met 15 years ago, when Jenny moved into the same compound as Darren.

They quickly formed a close friendship and 11 years later, discovered a romantic spark.

"It wasn't love at first sight but we were very good friends," Darren said.

He described their love as 'magical'.

While they're surrounded by the solemn and morbid on a day-to-day basis, the pair manage to keep the spark alive and they're dead serious about each other.

"We made it clear not to bring work home. The moment we tell each other it's couple time we try not to be affected by work," Jenny said.

In fact, being around death 24/7 has given the couple a better appreciation of life.

"We've come to cherish life a lot more in this industry… our relationships with our own families has gotten a lot better," Jenny said.

"The point is to live every day meaningfully, as you never know when you won't be around.

"People have the perception t hat the people who work in this industry are very solemn, but a lot are surprised to find we are both very happy, go lucky people."

Darren and Jenny will marry in October 2015. Photo: Jenny Tay.

Despite this, they're not afraid to talk about death and feel nobody should be, including children.

Mr Cheng is about to release a book 'Where did Grandpa Go?' which will help parents explain death in a child friendly way.

"The very first customer we had was my best friend. His father passed away and his nephew came up and asked 'hey where did grandpa go?'" Darren said.

"For kids it's pretty hard to explain death and the afterlife… this is the story of grandpa explaining to kids where he might go when he dies".

"We believe you shouldn't fear death in life and know that your life is limited".

Despite having mod ern views on death the pair said they remained quite traditional when it came to marriage.

Speaking with Darren and Jenny we learnt they are very much in love. Photo: Jenny Tay.

"We believe marriage is a form of partnership, where you do things together in life," Jenny said.

"We feel truly happy as partners".

Staying true to their 'til death do us part' mantra, the pair planned to return to work as soon as possible after their wedding.

"We'll take a few days for the wedding then head back to work," Jenny said.

"They're both important things in life".

Shea McGrath Denver Wedding Photographer Recommend 8 Beauty Tips Before Photographs

Shea McGrath Denver Wedding Photographer Recommend 8 Beauty Tips Before Photographs

Denver, CO, July 15, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Shea McGrath, Denver wedding photographer, provides beauty tips to brides-to-be in preparing for engagement and wedding photographs.

The natural oils actually help the hair stay styled lon ger and keep a nice shine for the photographs.5.

A New Wedding Trend Allows Families and Friends to Enjoy the Intimacy of the Ceremony

There is a new trend called "Unplugged Weddings" where guests are asked to refrain from using their smartphones during the entire event.

    Follow us

This new trend is actually beneficial in creating more intimate connections with the guests of the wedding. Nowadays, people are more interested and concerned with getting that perfect "selfie" than actually interacting with the other people in the wedding. That is why this "Unplugged Wedding" trend works.

Professional wedding photographer Lainie Hanlon recalled an incident when she had to ask a guest to take a seat because the guest was obstructing her view. However, the guest was persistent and kept on taking photos. Apparently, photography is the guest's hobby.

Hanlon added that she noticed the use of mobile devices in ceremonies has worsened over the years. Hanlon added that she tried talking the newlyweds out of this tradition. Most couples admitted that they did not really want the guests focusing on their smartphones all the time.

This is true for North Parramatta couple Amanda Watson and Sandy Free who got married January this year, according to SMH. They said they want their guests to enjoy the celebration and they would prefer to have the guest's attention focused on the wedding instead of their smartphones.

"Unplugged Wedding" is getting more and more popular. It is not just a fad. It is more of a reminder that people should stay connected in real life and not in social media.

Julie Petrella, a bride-to-be, told Press of Atlanta City that she wants to have an intimate affair with her family and friends when she gets married this October.

Petrella added that the flashes are just very distracting. "I've heard stories of frustration from brides and grooms about the role of social media during or after a wedding," said Petrella, 34. "People are sharing news that's really personal."

"Unplugged Weddings" bring us back to the basics, but it can also certainly improve the quality of connections of the people in the event as well as the privacy of the couple.

'Why I staged my wedding photos in a coffin'

'Why I staged my wedding photos in a coffin' By Heather Chen BBC News, Singapore
  • 13 July 2015
  • From the section Asia
  • Credits: Joel Lim The couple's jobs in the funeral trade played a large role in their wedding shoot

A Singaporean couple have created a stir online after posing with a coffin in their wedding photos.

For Jenny Tay and Darren Cheng, both undertakers, death played a "central and important part" in the photo shoot, taken for their upcoming wedding in October.

"A large part of the shoot was definitely inspired by our jobs," said Ms Tay, who is also the daughter of one of Singapore's most famous undertakers.

"Wedding shoots are often staged at places which bring the most memories. For us, work plays such a huge part of our lives so we wanted to do it in style."

But that was not the only reason behind the couple's photo shoot.

"Death is a part of life and shouldn't be seen as taboo," Ms Tay, who has also written a children's book about dealing with death, told the BBC.

"It's important to talk about death; it's part and parcel of everyone's life. Many Asian societies often portray it negatively - we hope to be able to debunk that taboo by encouraging people to be open about death."

The couple has received largely positive feedback about their wedding photos 'Pretty and whimsical'

Wedding photo shoots in Singapore are traditionally taken by many local couples ahead of their banquets.

A Star Wars-themed wedding shoot and another one based on the zombie apocalypse were some of the other creative shoots by Singaporean couples.

The coffin-themed photo shoot, which was initiated by Ms Tay, took place in a waterway park in Singapore.

"We wanted it to be pretty and whimsical, not at all morbid, so we staged it there and not in an actual cemetery," Ms Tay explained.

"We also didn't want to scare people and the reaction to it has been very positive."

Ms Tay also said the shoot took a day to film, and the weather was "very hot".

"Bravo! It paid off" - Many users on Facebook praised the couple's "unique" and "daring' photo shoot

Chinese geomancers have weighed in on the couple's shoot, and Ms Tay has decided not to display them at their wedding banquet so as not to "disrespect" any of their guests.

"Everyone has different opinions and it's not possible for everyone to share the same line of thought as us," she explained, adding that the couple will feature a set of "assassin-themed" wedding photographs taken in Japan instead.

    'Thinking outside the box'

But while guests may miss out on their coffin-themed shoot, the pictures drew a huge response on Facebook.

"Bravo to Jenny and Darren! They are very daring in their choice for a wedding shoot and I think it's paid off," said a Facebook user.

"It's literally 'til death do us part'," said another.

Other users were full of praise for the "unique approach" adopted by the couple.

"I think their shoot is creative and very tastefully done," said Molly Sim on Facebook. "It's a very nice change from the cookie c utter wedding shoots that we see done at Marina Bay Sands or Sentosa all the time."

"This is what you call 'thinking out of the box' - something their children and grandchildren will talk about for decades," said another user Jeffrey Poh.

    Wedded to luxury

Going by the Bollywood dialogue shaadi koi gudde gudiya ka khel nahi hai (marriage is not a child's play), which blatantly defines the seriousness of the most-celebrated affair in India, it is almost important, if not necessary, that one takes the arrangement seriously! After all, khaandaan ki izzat ka sawaal haI (it's about the family's respect)! So, after you are done calculating the budget of your social pride, you might as well head to hit a bargain at a two-day long wedding exhibition titled Wedding Wows at JW Marriott. Although the exhibition began on Saturday, welcoming the first spell of monsoon, even the full parking at the venue could not stop city folks from quenching their thirst for shopping - wedding shopping. In the labyrinth of over sixty stalls, exhibiting stitched and unstitched garments in silhouettes like silk, georgette, European chinon, net, and lawn, the exhibition also features stalls that attend to wedding photography, jewellery, mehandi and marriage se t designers. And those of you who want a peep into their married lives or if they are even getting married at all, the exhibition also offers tarot card readings that will cosmically sooth your worried nerves.

While the unstitched fabrics start from Rs 1,500, you can also get stitched lehangas at Studio Zoya stall for as much as Rs 3,500. The Tekchand Handloom House offers nets priced from Rs 400 onwards and we overheard a few women say, "Oh! It's a steal for just that amount of money!" Also, if you are a fan of Punjabi suits, the stall, Mutiyaar by Jasba offers interesting neck embroideries that are neither too flashy nor to jarring on the eyes, starting at just Rs 1,500. "We also have tops, dresses, gowns and tunics," informs the owner of the stall.

For those who would like to show their children how pretty they looked at their wedding with all that make-up, Deepika's Deep Clicks and Aman Sidhu Photography at the exhibition will take the bookings for you. And j ust when we thought that we forgot something, we are instantly reminded of the importance of the glow that is necessary for the bride-to-be. Let your ex-boyfriend whine and weep while you download the bulbul stylist app and get the bridal wellness and beauty regime at a click. "Since we are a start-up, we are offering services to people at very nominal rates. All you need to do is to download an app and book a bridal wellness and make up. The person will come to your house and give you the required services," shares Gagandeep of Bulbul stylist mobile app.

With stalls from designers belonging to the city, Punjab and Delhi, the exhibition really offers nominal pricing and a huge variety to choose from. However, a little heads up, mind the traffic jam around the venue. As for rest, happy shopping!

Nicky Hilton Wedding Photos: Hotel Heiress Wears Beautiful Lace Gown For Kensington Palace Ceremony

    Nicky Hilton

Blushing bride Nicky Hilton looked absolutely stunning outside her hotel in London today on the way to marry her fiance James Rothschild.

The hotel heiress donned a traditional white lace wedding gown by Valentino with a large train and sheer veil that draped several feet behind her as she walked arm and arm with her father Richard Hilton to a waiting car. The price tag for the dress? Nearly $80,000.

Her wedding gown is a major departure from the dress she wore at Paris Fashion Week on Sunday. She attended the Versace Haute Couture show in a 60s-inspired retro dress with gold grommets and sheer paneling. The frock was a little too short, and at certain angles you could see her bare rear end.

Nicky's fiance is the son of a British businessman. Hilton and the banking heir are tying the knot at Kensington Palace where Prince William and Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, currently reside.

According to People, the pair will wed at the Orangery in Kensington Gardens, which is near the William and Kate Middleton's palace home. The space was constructed in 1704 for Queen Anne to winter her orange trees.

Also spotted leaving the hotel were Nicky's sister Paris and mom Kathy Hilton in pale blue gowns. Paris carried a tiny bundle of yellow roses, while the mother of the bride donned a dress in a different shade of blue with fancy embroidery on the hemline.

Guests at the wedding reportedly included supermodel Naomi Campbell, actress Kate Beckinsale and former First Daughter Chelsea Clinton and her husband Marc Mezvinsky.

This is Nicky's second time down the aisle. She wed childhood friend Todd Andrew Meister in Las Vegas in 2004. Their marriage was annulled three months later. She and Rothschild started dating in 2011 and got engaged in Italy last summer.

Could this be the best photograph EVER captured at an Irish wedding?

There's nothing quite like the craic at an Irish wedding.

But guests at a wedding last week got more laughs than they ever anticipated, when the poor groom had some difficulty getting his wedding ring to fit.

The hilarious snap - captured by photographer Paul Duane - shows the priest presiding over the ceremony pull a priceless face as the newlywed struggles with his ring.

Will the ring fit? Little girls face is brill but the priests face is just priceless! Amazing couple, great day was had. thanks for choosing me to be your photographer and you should have your DVD tomorrow <3

And the flowergirl was also highly amused by the groom's misfortune.

While the identity of the happy couple is unknown, after Paul uploaded the brilliant image to his Facebook page, it was spotted by some eagle-eyed locals who said they would be posting it to the parish page and making sure the priest knew his comical expression was giving people a giggle.

Not enough wedding laughs for one day? This picture captures the moment wedding photographer FALLS OVER - leaving the bridal party open-mouthed.

Big day, huge price tag: The skyrocketing cost of a wedding

If you're about to get hitched, hang on to your wallet.

Each year, Weddingbells Magazine polls thousands of brides- and- grooms-to-be for a glimpse of their wedding wants and needs. Then, it crunches the numbers to forecast trends, including how much the average wedding will cost, and releases it in an annual survey.

    The forecast for 2015? A cool $31,717.

Before you decide to elope, consider that whopping figure includes some big bells and whistles: a honeymoon averaging $4,489, and an engagement ring clocking in at $3,125.

Weddingbells magazine editor Jen O'Brien says that average gets skewed by larger cities. Booking a venue in downtown Toronto will cost considerably more than one in Corner Brook, for instance.

    The pressure of Pinterest

Both the betrothed and those in the wedding business point to media, especially social media, as having a massive influence over spending. In particular, Pinterest — the popular site where users share photos and inspirations like a virtual clipboard — is widely used for wedding inspiration.

'I didn't expect it to be so expensive'- Bride-to-be Faith Parsons

"(Couples are) spending a lot of time on Pinterest before even becoming engaged, so they're not really willing to compromise on their dream days — they have an exact vision of what they want, and they're going to get it at all costs," says O'Brien.

She adds that 75 per cent of people surveyed by her magazine end up blowing their wedding budgets.

Andrea Hounsell, owner of the St. John's-based wedding planning company Something Borrowed Something Blue, agrees.

"I think that people are seeing a lot more photos of weddings than they used to before, and a lot more inspiration pictures," Hounsell said.

    That inspiration adds up.

Wedding photographers routinely charge upwards of $3,000 for one day of service. With widespread exposure to professional photos in unique locations, couples now want unique mementoes of matrimony: one Corner Brook-based photography company has worked with couples who have booked helicopters in order to get the perfect shot — on a mountaintop.

    The big cost...of chair covers?

Even scaling back to simple decor might not be the answer.

    Jen O'Brien

Magazine editor Jen O'Brien: 'They have an exact vision of what they want, and they're going to get it at all costs.' (Twitter)

"If you have 300 guests, or 250-plus guests, it doesn't matter how simple your decor is. Just chair covers alone are $4 to $5.50 per chair cover," Hounsell said.

"Times that by 300 people, and you have a very large chunk of your decor budget probably eaten up already by that point in time."

The Weddingbells survey cited venue and catering costs as the single largest expense, up to one third the total cost for the event.

And if you're wondering who's footing this bill?

"About half the people we surveyed said they're relying on their parents to chip in," O'Brien said.

"And actually 61 per cent of brides indicated that cash donations are an important part of their wedding budget. So people really are relying on those envelopes full of cash on the big day to pay for everything."

    Consider the winter wedding

One way to save big is to skip summertime.

Half of the 2,600 marriage licences issued by the Newfoundland and Labrador government in an average year are handed out in just two months: July and August.

O'Brien said venues can charge a premium during that period, and couples can score better deals negotiating during the off- season.

Hounsell adds it's important to plan ahead, and shop around. "Get a little idea of how much things cost from decorators beforehand," she said.

"Then set a realistic budget for what you want your decor to be, before you get into the nitty gritty details of picking out centrepieces and linens, because you really can go from zero to 60 very quickly."

'Everything was kind of a shocker'

Bride-to-be Faith Parsons has taken some of these tips to heart.

She's on track for an October wedding, with a $5,000 budget.

"We did a lot of the DIY. We got a lot of things from the dollar store, and spray-painted them ourselves, and did glittering ourselves. Just to keep costs down rather than get somebody else to do it."

But even then, Parsons was caught off guard by the price of planning.

"I found everything was kind of a shocker. I didn't expect it to be so expensive," she said.
